Fetal Genetic Pathology
Intrapartum and neonatal mortality rates have decreased significantly over the years due to advances in obstetrics and neonatology. However, antenatal mortality has not shown a comparable reduction. About 60% of potential humans do not survive to birth. Congenital malformations, chromosome abnormalities, and genetic disorders are common in this population. Since the early 1980’s, Shodair Children’s Hospital has had a fetal genetic pathology program focused on identifying potential genetic causes for fetal demise and providing accurate recurrence risk and genetic counseling to families.
